In August of 2009 during the Town Carnival, a twinning
charter between ourselves and the District of Varades was officially signed.
In March 2010 a similar ceremony took place in Varades, and we are now officially twinned.

Knighton has been twinned with Varades in the Loire valley since August 2009. Varades is the chief town of a district of six towns: Belligné, La Chapelle Saint Sauveur, Le Fresne sur Loire, Montrelais, La Rouxière and Varades. It is situated approximately half way between Nantes and Angers.
Visitors from France have travelled to Knighton, and we have been guests in France. In June last year a group of 37 people, adults and teenagers, set off to France by coach to spend a wonderful weekend with host families. Activities ranged from a fishing competition which was won by members of the visiting party to evening parties where everyone enjoyed sampling the local foods and wines in a relaxing atmosphere.
This year on Friday 24th August, a party of French guests will be arriving in Knighton for the weekend. On the Friday evening there will be a welcome reception at The Offa’s Dyke Centre when a new marker will be unveiled “Varades Way”. Saturday 25th August is Knighton Show and Carnival. Our French guests have expressed interest in visiting the show and seeing the processions through town. A buffet lunch for our guests and hosts will be held at Knighton Church in Wales Primary School. Sunday has been left open for hosts to choose what they wish to do during the day, in the evening there is a farewell party for guests and their hosts at The Knighton Hotel. Monday morning before our visitors will begin their journey back to France.
The association would like to involve more local families, both as guests in France and as hosts to French visitors here.
Our visitors are really looking forward to meeting with people who live in the area. There is no need to be a fluent French speaker; most of our visitors can speak English, usually better than I speak French.
